GMC Registration After PLAB or UKMLA: Career Readiness Guide
A practical GMC registration readiness guide for IMGs on the PLAB route and UK graduates on the MLA route — what to verify on GMC pages, what to run in parallel with exam prep, and common timeline mistakes.
Passing an exam is only one stage of becoming eligible to practise in the UK. This guide separates what the GMC actually requires from informal forum advice, and shows how to run career admin in parallel with revision — without inventing visa or immigration shortcuts.

1. Identify your route
Route A — International medical graduate (typical PLAB path)
The GMC's PLAB guides describe a pathway where most doctors who qualified outside the UK / EEA / Switzerland need to:
- Create a GMC Online account
- Show an acceptable primary medical qualification and acceptable English language evidence
- Pass PLAB 1 (180 single-best-answer questions in 3 hours)
- Pass PLAB 2 (OSCE / clinical assessment)
- Apply for registration with a licence to practise (application must be approved within two years of passing PLAB 2)
Attempt limits apply: candidates may continue until they have failed PLAB 1 four times; further attempts require applying for an additional attempt (see GMC booking guidance).
Route B — UK medical graduate (MLA path)
UK students graduating under the MLA must pass the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA) as part of their degree before the GMC grants provisional registration. Your school administers the assessments; you do not book the university AKT through the PLAB Pearson VUE flow.

Provisional vs full registration (IMGs)
GMC registration guides distinguish provisional and full registration. Broadly: if you have not completed an acceptable internship / equivalent, you may be on a provisional route into Foundation Year 1; if you have completed internship, you typically apply for full registration. 2. English language evidence — time it carefully
Before you can book PLAB, the GMC must accept your English language evidence. Common accepted tests are IELTS Academic and OET Medicine, with score thresholds published in GMC English language guidance (commonly discussed as IELTS overall 7.5 with at least 7.0 in each domain, or OET grade B in all four sub-tests — confirm the live GMC page, because requirements and accepted evidence types can change).
Critical planning point used by many IMGs:
- Evidence must still be valid when you apply for registration, not only when you book PLAB 1
- Taking IELTS/OET years too early can force a retake

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for GMC registration after passing PLAB 1 only?
No. The GMC PLAB pathway requires you to pass both PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 before you can apply for registration with a licence to practise. PLAB 1 alone unlocks booking PLAB 2; it is not a licence.
How long do I have after PLAB 2 to apply for registration?

Do UKMLA scores go into Foundation Programme applications?
